Empowering Excluded Teenagers through Sport in Newcastle upon Tyne

Background: In Newcastle upon Tyne, a growing number of teenagers face social exclusion due to unemployment, family breakdown, or involvement in antisocial behaviour. Recognising the potential of sport to transform lives, the Sport for Social Good Foundation launched the “Next Step Newcastle” programme to re-engage these young individuals. The programme worked with 25 teenagers, providing them with meaningful opportunities for growth, development and to develop a lifelong passion for port.

The Project: “Next Step Newcastle” used football and basketball as the main platforms, and delivered weekly training sessions were complemented by workshops on communication skills, goal-setting, and pathways to education or employment. Local sports clubs partnered with us to offer mentoring and progression opportunities.

Outcomes:

  • 85% of participants reported improved self-confidence and motivation.
  • 60% of the teenagers enrolled in vocational training or re-entered formal education within 3 months of the project finishing.
  • Crime rates among participants dropped by 40% within the programme’s first year.

Impact: Through sport, the programme not only reduced social isolation but also equipped participants with tools to improve health and progress their careers. Many graduates of “Next Step Newcastle” have since registered onto a second programme but this time to act as ‘Ambassadors’ to younger participants.
